Honestly I think part of the issue is getting to be that you not only have to make it look cool but also different from what every other game out there is doing. In the case of Div and Div2 though they're also going for a type of realism that means their gear has to look somewhat like real life stuff .

I have this as well in most games. There’s ton of armour (and more than a few perks) where all I can think of is “how would anyone find this appealing??”.

When MMOs - and that’s what these service games are, really - removed things like accessory chiuces at creation and removed gear colour pallette customization, they got fugly.
