Lots of books are first person present, including much of Neal Stephenson and Margaret Atwood's output. I won't put a book down because of it but I don't like it either.

I think the piece is saying that, taken as a whole, Star Wars hasn't aged well. When it was just the OT, it was thought of as a classic series.
