Why is it gobsmacking? Your mortgage interest is a far cry, by itself, from itemizing. The standard deduction for a couple is $12,000. The additional 10,000 in repairs would result in a total tax savings of 900 - 1500 (15% marginal rate/25% marginal rate). So if you spend 18000, you save 1500.

Digital radio is not internet. Though if you have an “HD” radio, you’ll notice pretty terrible coverage (at least where I live). If they could sell the FM spectrum it would probably generate enough revenue to upgrade to digital but my understanding is that it takes more towers.
