But when the 2013 Fusion came out, it DID compete. Ford was selling well over 250k of them and it got great reviews. The previous generation Fusion, right at the end, was getting rave reviews from Consumer Reports for reliability, beating Toyota and Honda. Ford did a damn good job, made serious progress and now…

Toyota is selling over 700,000 Camrys/Corollas this year and evidently making money at it. Ford is abandoning the segments completely; this is insane. I’m a Ford fanboy (see username) but this is an awful, short-sighted decision that they’re going to regret for a long, long time.

Agreed, people who bought Fiestas or Focuses will go somewhere else now, not buy an suv they don’t need. If they have a good experience at Kia/Mazda/Toyota etc. you’re losing customers for life

They aren’t switching to full sized SUVs. The CUVs don’t carry the mileage penalty that their big brothers do. That said, I think it’s terribly short-sighted too.

In 1930 the Ford Model A Fordor Sedan was a two-box high roof vehicle with a high step-in height. It has come full circle that the average family vehicle now is a two-box four door high roof vehicle with a high step-in height.

Everyone driving SUVs so they can see better is like everyone standing up at a concert.
