The other piece of this is the conservative “thinking out loud” thing they all do. “I’m not saying this is the way it is, I’m just thinking out loud here hypothetically.” It goes along well with the whole “I’m not saying it, but I did hear it somewhere” argument.

This reminded me of Tom Cotton’s op-ed getting published in the NYT. At least the Times’s opinion page editor resigned after public backlash over the piece.

I read the original piece when it first appeared. I knew going in that it’ll be birther bullshit, but I wanted to find out just exactly what this particular angle was going to be. I don’t think my blood pressure has recovered yet.
