At UMass Boston they have a course on science fiction writing so people are coming around to it slowly, at least on the undergraduate level. Octavia Butler wrote amazing science fiction.
The Flat World and Education (or The Flat Earth and Education? I don't remember) gave me a rude awakening in terms of racial inequities in our education system. I don't know if it is a textbook or it is widely available but I wish I didn't do textbook buyback with that one.
