The AW609 has been in development for well over a decade. After Bell, the co-maker of the V-22 Osprey, for which AW609 is based, dropped out of the program, Agusta Westland has continued with it.

I know, I just like pointing out how giant the 26 is whenever I have the vaguest opportunity. It still boggles my mind.
