Yeah, and no one has really stepped up to fill that niche. Most of the attempts are either to light or too heavy. Lethal Weapon is similar in some ways when it’s not trying to be deep.

I went through a phase of watching most of Allen’s films through the 80s, and Manhattan was my least favorite. I still don’t really get it. I even prefer the mostly disliked dramas (Interiors!) much better.

It’s not a game of Spot the Reference because it has great characters. Season 2's plot didn’t always hang together like I’d have liked, but I’m still invested in these characters, even if they were literally playacting ET or Aliens.

Stranger Things is a very good show on its own terms. It’s not a game of spot-the-reference.

Very interesting. I’m glad it clicked for you. I like most of the arcs but I can kind of see how not prioritizing them would improve some seasons quite a bit.

The first season only has a handful of really good episodes (Angel, Prophecy Girl), but I don’t understand how you could continue watching the show if you didn’t like seasons 2-3. We all come to it differently, I guess. Angelus plot in S2 hooked me forever.
