I live in the woods. My neighbors and I have traded favors over the years. Snowblowing each other’s driveways etc. Both neighbors mowed my lawn when my mower shit the bed a few years ago. Recently my neighbor called me when a suspicious van was parked in my driveway (it was a friend picking up a minifridge).

Something being open source reduces the chances of that code being malicious because anybody can easily go look at it to find out. Obviously, this depends on community interest in the project, but the premise is that with everyone watching, it’s harder to be evil.
