I believe as journalists there is some leeway. The first tape was sent to the Chicago Sun-Times as reporters they have to confirm the veracity of what is on the tape before they can report on it.

I don’t have a problem with a news organization watching a tape sent to it so it can confirm the contents are what the sender says they are and write a story on it. It’s not like they pulled a Gawker and posted a clip of the tape with commentary and a laughtrack or anything.

This particular case had some damning details against Gaines. I was shocked when the initial award was given. There’s been some bad shootings but this one was justified. She tried to use her own child as a shield ffs.
