My Yamaha jet ski from the mid 2000's did the same thing. “Slow mode” on, top speed limit ~44 MPH, it had enough fuel for about 4 hours of operation. “Slow mode” off, top speed limit ~55 MPH, it had enough fuel for about 2 hours of operation.
