I do it the way you do, but haven’t bought a phone since 2015 since people I know keep using stupid deals like “buy one get another with a new line free” then giving me the second one.

But there are all sorts of weird different payment plans and bundles and the true cost/what I pay can be confusing. And returns aren’t easy and phones are designed to need cases so it really does become a messy process.

That was exactly my point. Max used “communism” to refer to “Communism (as defined by the Soviet regime).” At least I read it to mean Soviet Communism directly, the US wasn’t so much fighting the idea of communism as whatever bastardized version the Soviets practiced.
