I think the California office was closed because it became unnecessary once they were bought by McCann Ericsson, as they would have their own resources in LA.
I thought Peggy's line about Margarine was a reference to the first day of the merger at SC&P. During that brainstorming session, Ted Chauogh had been impressed by her knowledge of the origin of Margarine as a butter substitute for Napoleon's army, shortly before getting ridiculously drunk trying to keep up with Don.
I'll miss this show a lot more than I thought I would when I first heard of it.
