When Intel originally designed them, they were supposed to be optical, but they are all copper now. And having a chip in each end still shouldn't raise the price that much.

Its the same as any other copper cable, it's the interface that makes Thunderbolt great, not the physical cable. Because it transmits power and signal together shouldn't add $35 to a cable.
