Honestly, I did it via YouTube watching a few vids from different people. I use a thin metal opening tool to gently pry a small gap, then I use the plastic tools to work that gap all the way around.

I still use iTunes, but there’s an open source OS called Rockbox that many people use as well.

Meanwhile, I have 4 iPod classics that I’ve converted to SD storage, and changed the batteries on. I expect they’ll run forever.
