Apparently the plea deal would have enabled them to serve most of their time in a federal facility instead of a less comfortable state prison. Also, it would have kept their racist text messages and other evidence from entering the public record, since it wasn’t part of the state trial.
All credit to Ahmaud’s mother who forced this to trial when originally they would have done a plea deal with a potentially lighter sentence and cushier prison life.
