Most of the time there is a scene in which a customer would ask one of the servers (who is most of the time ashy person in the Anime and might be part of the main cast

Why do the customers ask them to “smile kudasai”? What is the “cultural reason” for that. I am trying to imagine going to a Mc here and asking them to smile while ordering my menu. Can someone explain it to me please?
