I have a 6 y/o son and a couple of shelter dogs (70lb pitbull & 12lb Chihuahua - best friends!), and I have to say that while they aren't the same thing at all, the dogs DO require a higher level of commitment and work than, say, goldfish or cats. Still not as high as a kid, but it's kind of comparable, to be honest.

Awesome post, I wish people would understand what a commitment a pet of any kind is. All too often parents give in to their crying kids over a pet and the pet gets neglected on a chain in the back yard. Of course, not always but it happens a LOT.
