I don't see anything wrong with this. The players know they will never make the NBA and want to enjoy one more year of college basketball. It's great that the players are able to work around the NCAA's eligibility rules so easily.
This isn't entirely correct. I agree with your point on value vs. skill, but to me it's semantics. The casual statistician would make the assumption that a more skillful defender adds more value and vise verse. It's not a relevant difference in my opinion, but you're technically correct.
I disagree. They already hired Alex Rodriguez (who was as productive as a 1B/3B) - so they could either put ARod at 3B and DJ at SS (which they ultimately did) or they could move DJ to 2B or 3B and keep ARod at SS. The net effect is the same, but now you can hire a 3B, which are usually more productive at the plate…
