Needs more Rider Strong.
When did the "bwaaams" you mentioned become a thing? Seriously, they've become so ubiquitous that they've reached drinking game levels of parody. They're also a good signifier now for things that I have no interest in watching.
Yeah, the proliferation of "punk" t-shirts in retail stores boggles my mind. In the 90's you would have to go to an actual show to get a rock t-shirt or at least a really cool record store. Remember those? If I had a 40, I'd tip it…
Exactly. I'm pretty sure that the mall punks that made up their fan base had no idea who Black Flag were, except maybe kids that knew about them tangentially through the involvement of Henry Rollins.
I was reticent to watch it for the longest time (despite hearing good things), but when I finally did, it absolutely destroyed me.
Peter Weir is the reason that any movie is good. At least any movie that he's involved with. The guy is so underrated, it's ridiculous.
As a director, Niccol's output since Gattaca has pretty much been the epitome of diminishing returns. Which leads me to wonder if he should have just stuck to writing.
I agree. I live in NC and in the past I've gone to the coast at various times during the off season and there is this last man on earth feeling that is haunting for lack of a better word. It's like you can sense that people were there at some point, but you're not sure when or if they'll ever return. I think it…
For better or worse, you're absolutely right. It was the first time that I stepped back and thought, wow, Pinkett Smith really has some serious chops. Who knew?
I think it's one of the rare songs where the music video actually improves the intent of the song in my opinion. Something about that black and white video perfectly evokes the wistful nostalgia you mention. Also, when I hear this song it reminds me of being a kid and a time when the world seemed full of promise.
Especially hated how they changed the lyric to: "I saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac." Christ, talk about trying too hard.
Yeah, this song came out when I was nine years old and it was definitely the first Tom Petty song that I was aware of. A few years later when Full Moon Fever came out and I had been exposed to more of Petty's music, it was egregiously obvious that this song was somewhat of an anomaly in his catalog. Hell, it was…
Thanks, I'll check it out. An ex girlfriend was really into Paul Theroux, but I've never read any of his books. Totally agree about Peter Weir, who I feel is one of the most underappreciated directors of all time. The guy's track record is damn near spotless, but you never hear much about him. I looked at his…
He's been drinking Pharell's blood.
It's definitely easy fodder for any number of stupid jokes.
I'm still waiting for the solo album from Enrique's mole. It was like Samson's hair. Once he got rid of it, he lost all of his powers.
Mosquito Coast is a masterpiece. All the talent involved is at the top of their game and every time I watch that movie it resonates with me more and more. So few films explore the dynamics of father-son relationships in such a complex (and truthful) way.
Good luck. Sincerely. The social worker route is a noble goal and you should absolutely pursue it. I think the most satisfying thing in the world would be to come home every night and know that you're making a positive difference in someone's life.
And I hate to admit Juliette Lewis. Granted, I was a senior in high school and my taste then was dubious at best…
