Love this piece, but I beg to differ on the "where to start." I began with "Music for Airports," and that did the trick for me. If you don't have the patience for Airports, it's unlikely that you'll appreciate any of his work.

I gave my ticket to my girlfriend-at-the-time's best friend, neither of whom liked the band. They went, and when I got home, neither could tell me a single song they played.I never did…
I hadn't heard of Ready Player One, but I bought it last night on the recommendation. I'm only about a third of the way through the book, but it's really fantastic so far.
