Technically, they've always been round. Just not always in pairs on each side (occasionally triplets). The difference is really whether these early C1 cars had the full cover over the light or not...

Merc SL600 Sport. V12 with immense low end torque and absolutely no weight in the back. Its awesome fun, but terrible on just wet roads. Make the roads cold and wet/icy, and the 5000lb german road tank will be simply uncontrollable.
