Del Toro makes movies I love. But as evidenced by the reception of nerd movies, contemporary audiences still don’t like science fiction and fantasy. Most people claiming to be nerds are, in fact, hipster posers.

It’s true that SW has always been classic pulp space fantasy. And this kind of oneupsmanship is a common trope for that genre. I don’t know that the genre itself is that relevant to contemporary audiences. Genre tropes / audience expectations (mostly because the audience doesn’t actually know anything about pulp space…

James Horner was quite the fresh composer at the time. The hard-to-find Krull soundtrack is especially good.
