My 2004 civic stripper (crank windows, manual gearbox, no toys at all) has 230 K on it and uses no oil, delivers around 35 mpg and is daily driven. It’s possible to get long life and lower lubrication usage in car, it’s just rarer than it ought to be.  Profit needs to grow, so, that’s likely a factor.
