There are always reasons why we should let this crime or that one slide. It’s seemingly never a good day to draw a line and hold it.

You say “tilting at windmills.” I say “demonstrating that you have the moral authority to govern.” Letting everything slide in the interests of some pipe-dream of bipartisanship or a return to “norms” that have been dead for at least a generation is not that.

My point was that Trump can be impeached. Then it’s on the record. All of the water-carrying so far has been informal and can be dismissed as “ordinary politics” by the bad-faith coalition of the GOP (i.e. all of them).

Impeachment happens entirely in the House. It is then up to the Senate to try the accused. Impeaching Trump and then watching as the Senate GOP rallies to his defense ties the party ever more closely to his misdeeds. They can no longer distance themselves from him, but become his allies. That has political value.
