My Evidence professor also showed a scene during class. The procedure aspects of the movie really are spot on. If I were teaching criminal procedure, I'd probably assign the movie for homework.

I think it makes a lot of sense considering it's a review of a program that spends the majority of its airtime mimicking/parodying reality.

(Hence why they couldn’t respond to crew instructions for Takedown to move his bag into the overhead compartment, as per airline regulations.)

That's my take on it, too. The way the movie appears to be handling it, Sulu wasn't closeted all these years. His orientation just doesn't matter in Trek's idealized 23rd Century.
