I always played Tony Hawk games with the d-pad because it was a lot easier to do the trick combos.  Worked great and was very comfortable.

Same here. I have only had a Wii U for the past 4 years, the console with “long droughts” and “no games” yet I still have backlog that includes Star Fox Zero, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Rayman Legends, Trine 1 & 2, as well as several VC and indie games and some Wii games I either haven’t started or quite finished.

Man you took the words right out of my mouth. That’s EXACTLY how I felt about Skyward Sword. It was exhausting to play. TP on the other hand felt like the big open spaces served no purpose other than to make it take longer to get from place to place. Breath of the Wild finally seems to be doing it right with

My favorite use of the dual screen for the Wii u was 2 player asynchronous play. Examples of this are Hyrule Warriors and every Lego game which allows one player to use the whole TV and another player to use just the gamepad screen. This is the best way to play Lego games IMO.
