I agree with the Muppets idea. I feel like Muppets Most Wanted set the franchise back to "no one cares" territory. And it wasn't that great.

This movie is awful, but it was mostly an awful lot of fun. And like 1 minute into the movie they reveal the preposterous set piece wherein the climax will take place. I turned to a friend and literally said "this is how the movie ends…"

We howled at that in the theater at the press screening.

I never felt comfortable about how the Dixie Chicks were lauded as left-wing heroes right after that. It's like we celebrated too much at their arrival, gloating that we'd won over a COUNTRY MUSIC ACT, and we weren't really up to supporting them afterward.
