I have curly hair, too. I'm not huge on products because of said build-up. Has she tried water-based products? I sometimes use one called Curl Keeper. It's inexpensive and rinses cleanly. Best of all, no nasty crunchiness like you get with hair gel. :)

I'll keep taking my chances with keratin treatments applied by a pro in a salon with vents above each station. Sulfates really do strip your skin and hair. My skin and hair are very dry and I need any bit of moisture I can retain.
