Murakami YES!! Funny that you mention the cat thing- between Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore, plus that bizarre "town of cats" segment of 1Q84, cats seem to be a favorite of his. That and male protagonists who drink whiskey and listen to jazz music.
