Yes! This really bothered me too. Jane's obsessed with finding her attacker, moves to Monterey and conveniently befriends (unwittingly) his wife? I understand the book had a few more steps to it but seems like a pretty big loophole to have one of your central mysteries resolved by a big coincidence.
