There's a great (yet admittedly hard-to-read at times) novel from Kim Stanley Robinson (the guy who wrote that fantastic Mars trilogy) called The Years of Rice and Salt. It's a really good alt-history "what if" novel. It pretty much proposes the same idea.

It was never a fair fight between fundamentalist Christianity and D&D. One was a dangerous system full of dark mysticism and threats to warp a young mind beyond repair, and the other was a tabletop RPG.

Say what you will about their work (which I tend to love, moreso when it gets bashed). The Wachowskis are awesome people.
