Wow. It seems really beyond the grasp of some people and firms to just have a policy of "treat people the same" (and to be self-aware enough not to think you're doing that when actually you're unconsciously discriminating). And of course by "the same" I don't mean "pretend the black lady is neither black nor a lady"

Didn't seem sarcastic to me. Now the other reply about what exactly he's paying for, yeah, but the original comment...nope, not so much. Just read to me like Proofer thought sincerely that men should still be ordering meals for women as men still pay for them. We can argue all ya want about what was really meant, but

But the original comment was in the present tense and did not include the word "1950s", making it sound as though he meant men of all eras, including today.

Tellingly, you did not say "1950s" in your original comment.

I do not understand this comment. I do not understand the assumption that men pay for all meals.

BURN! :)

The Knot is useful if you want a fairly traditional wedding with all the usual stuff. Its checklists are completely useless to anyone going with an even slightly off-kilter template or idea, and its tools almost impossible to use if your budget is atypical (it took so long to delete a bunch of useless crap from their

I agree that we all have an ingrained moral compass, but I feel that compass is based on societal structures built by social animals in order to have a civilization - we have them because we need them in order to carry out our tendency as a race to be social. Any animal or alien that also had a civilization would need

And I looked down and I saw that there was only one set of footprints, and I said, "aha, I knew it! We are all alone."

One big difference between the two is that, yes, the Taiwanese are more outspoken and can be forceful when pushed to it (though they don't like to be, very generally speaking, unless they're old and feel they've earned the right).

Your last long paragraph...sigh. It's the same in Taiwan, although that is starting to slowly change. Taiwan and Japan are similar (in many ways more similar than Taiwan and China - often it feels like Taiwan is Japan But Full Of Chinese Speakers) but one way in which they differ is that PDA is more accepted here, and

Yep, there's no indication at all what his family's income is.

I thought a whole part of the story was that the parents were very strict, though, which would make me think they were overly attentive. If they were extremely neglectful, then that would be a story that made sense. A very sad story. But if they were so strict and unmoving that she was *scared* of them...?

You're right, I don't know. It doesn't matter to me if it's true, really, but this is a comment thread and that was my first thought. I am genuinely not trying to harp on this woman or her story, I just honestly was struck by how off that one part sounded. But you're right, I don't know.

This is 99% sweet, 1% "HUH?"

wait, we're all noticing the crotch-chop but not the totally screwed up arm?

I highly recommend following Up Worth It (@upworthit) on Twitter. It's full of lovely fake Upworthy headlines (no dumb videos to go with them).

Yes yes yes yes.

It is really seriously good. In fact, start your beets this way every time and every beet dish you make from then on will taste amazing.

Fair enough, but then you're not making kung pao chicken. If you like it, great. Enjoy your Hoisin Chicken.
