I did read the article. And the majority was expounding on the tone set by the title. I would have bought more into the nuance if that context had been expounded on but it wasn’t. Instead we get even more fuel for the fire with an example that a modern interpretation makes it even more racist.

The title sets the thesis of the article (whether that was intended or not) and the author spends 2/3rds of the article defending the thesis. At this point, if you’re a modern reader, you’re going to conclude “let’s ditch this”. Yes — there’s a weak defense against censorship in the last bit about context but context…

That’s my point. We know that. Most works from that time period have that baked into their DNA. So we should ditch everything from that period and forget it was ever written?

That’s kinda like saying 19th century Europe was racist as fuck and imperialist garbage.
