There does seem to be that tendency, though way more with boys than girls, but in the Korra case, I think the show-runners really did lay the groundwork very well for a slow, developing friendship-into-love. I am not surprised. I wish it were the exception, but at least online, it seems to be a very very common thread in this sort of slash fandom. Sherlock fandom is especially toxic for some reason but every fandom I've ever followed online generally has just awful awful misogynistic strains.
