Exactly. And Uber knows that a race to the bottom would be bad for business, since they’re taking a cut. So they standardize prices, and effectively dictate all the terms of service. It may be inconvenient for them that this turns them into a transportation company, but that’s ultimately the effect. If they want to be

Here’s the problem: if Uber drivers are independent contractors, why does Uber set the prices for the services they offer? Let’s face it: the app is not merely putting you in contact with another person so you can strike a private bargain with them. They are putting you in contact and determining how much the service

And where that argument falls apart (and I know you’re not actually making said argument in earnest) is that Uber, not the driver, names the price. Which sort of flies in the face of the idea that they’re just matching you up with somebody, who then sells you a service directly. Uber is not only a simple middle-man,

Great, but he’s the one who made it. Deal with it.

I mean, Roman Polanski is a great director, setting all else aside. I want great stories to be told by great directors.

...while also expressing concern that it’s going to be Fight Club all over again with this thing, in terms of dumb teenage boys taking the movie’s charismatic but psychologically damaged hero as some kind of screwed-up role model.

Yeah, this is probably the funniest take I’ve seen on any topic in a while. For starters, Blink-182 convinced a lot of dummies that they were making music somewhere in the ballpark of “punk rock,” so they were already not trying to come off as super-polished pop crooners, or whatever. That’s why Tom DeLonge got to

Nobody cares what Dylan Farrow thinks about anything.

I find out about more youtubers these days by them not apologising for misbehaviour than I do by looking for good content.

Yeah, it really does kind of bother me that the author seems to think that penning articles like this is the way to approach concerns about new forms of male contraception. It’s far more about dunking on “cis males” than it is about, you know, spreading correct information that might actually allay said concerns.

What value would decades of research into female birth control have on understanding the potential side effects of male birth control? Are they the same drugs and have they been tested on males or something?

They don’t care. They aren’t trying to be consistent or avoid hypocrisy.

Even if it were real, that would just be an insanely ugly photograph from a post-processing perspective. I’m not sure why people think shit like that looks good.

The problem with your argument is that “independent contractor” actually has a legal definition, and Uber’s treatment of its drivers doesn’t adhere to said definition.

The problem is that if you let them set their own rate it will do the opposite and create a race to the bottom.

What a horrible take. This just sounds like a rehash of the “fast food jobs are explicitly for part-timers in high school, they don’t deserve a living wage!” Which is why, of course, fast food restaurants are open during school hours, right?

Uber and Lyft are just trying to hold on and not go completely bankrupt before fully automated cars are available and they can just fire all these pesky humans. It’s their only real hope for ever turning a profit.

If you wouldn’t do it to a fellow dude coworker, don’t do it to a lady coworker.

If you’re instincts are going to fail you, just don’t even bother with the risk.

In the case of PC stores, there are far fewer barriers involved in exclusivity on one store or another, so I find the level of anger over the Epic Game Store startling.
