I think it would've gone over well. The Deadspin readership/commentariat is fairly well-rounded. The Burrows joke may not have been as universal as this one, but it still would've been a hit. But this is a good one. Let's be happy with this joke, and leave the speculation of what could've been to greater minds.

This is false equivalence. Michael Sam and Jason Collins were newsworthy because they were unprecedented: no NBA/NFL player had ever come out as openly gay.
