Tech note:  Paul Gallico was an American.  Apparently Norman Rockwell was a fan of his.  …What's interesting is that it's actually about (ultimately) the evacuation of Dunkirk; I haven't read the book, but I saw a TV dramatization of it years ago, with Richard Harris in the lead as Philip Rhyader.

RegularGonzalez, I think that middle bit is a first-person narrative of how one of the gang leaders was drawn into the world of organized crime.  "…and a voice called out, 'Shoot!"  "These hands were then fit to receive alms."

Ever hear of a band from Denver called Thinking Plague?  Absolutely amazing in an avant-prog way, and they're from, well, Denver.

I think it's a II-flat chord before a V-I cadence.

Oh, yes.  *W&W* is one of their best ever, IMO.  That era is really much like Genesis before *The Lamb…*, but it's better-produced, the twiddly bits are more evenly distributed among the songs, and there's a bit more of a "player's vibe" to it.  The surreal edge is largely missing, but that's OK with me, since we

I'm afraid you'll have to turn in your Cred Card now for accusing Bowie of being wrong about *anything*.

Actually, you could very much say that about the title track to Genesis' *A Trick of the Tail*.  Generic Indie Kid would only see that it's about some woodland fantasy creature, but what it's really about is what it's like to be truly "different".

You might also try Ian Anderson's 2Ks solo albums *The Secret Language of Birds* and *Rupi's Dance*.  Sort of a neo-*Stand Up* vibe, without the heavy bits and with some of the "twee" vibe (which I like very much, actually).
