I think the c4 looks much better than the c5, and its performance was more impressive in its day. I really like the c4, and was disappointed by the c5 when it came out. So I will always prefer the c4. That said I acknowledge that-

The last generation MR2 wasnt turbo. This mistake suggest to me that there is a whole generation of MR2 you dont know about, and are generally not too familiar with enthusiast cars. I should have your job.

Ya, the lima and duratec are way different, just looked it up. the lima is ancient by comparison. nothing is shared except the rough displacement and cylinder count. kinda like the old 5.0 in the fox body compared to the one in the new mustang, nothing is shared.

Understanding this also helps you appreciate the genius of the MR2 and fiero. they took existing fwd economy car motor/trans set ups and moved them to the back of the the car, and used existing economy car front suspension/steering set-ups too, (the fiero and chevette have the same front design).

Im not super familiar with those particular motors but general principles-

motors where the cylinders run front to back (ranger) are called longitudinal, they run length wise. this is mostly front-rear stuff, like the ranger. motors that run the width of the car are transverse. this is mostly fwd stuff.

I know what you mean about the new(er) camaros. I took one of the last gen 1le to an autocross. Between the cars girth and visibility I ran over some cones in the staging lanes! How fantastically embarrassing!

I guess Im in the minority here, but these are actually amongst my favorite jr ferraris, aesthetically. I think these and the 355 are gorgeous. The 308/328 are pretty good, the 488/458 are alright and the 430/360/dino are blah.

This buy is a money making proposition. Its not the best driving experience you could get…

Its already passed, I think. Seems like 10 years ago you could get into a runner magnum pi car for like $25k.
