I think the hate stems from the disappointment of what could have been, I mean when it was shown at E3 it was this grand open world adventure mmo type game that looked amazing. But then we get this watered down version that while still fun because of the PvP is lacking a ton in PvE making it look kind of barren

Most JRPGs are about the characters and the stories involving them not the choices we make, But if I had to choose me favorite ones it would be Persona 3/4 , Fire Emblem: Awakening , The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy Tactics, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and can't think of anything else off the top of my head but…

For the most part I agree with you but in this case the base game feels so barren that I at least wish they put some effort to include one of the DLC areas in game. But yes most of what you explained I realize needs to be on disk.

because each Mushishi episode is its own self contained story with its own morals and themes, think of it like Aesop fables. There is no need for an over arching plot.
