I would have argued the opposite. I'm extremely competitive, but once I have thought through and played through nearly everything in a game, I need a new conquest to defeat my "friends".

I would argue that there is a cost associated with playing Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne for the 40th time.

A&A pbem works really well. There are several groups out there that facilitate that.
