I uploaded the docs before the tags expired, got an email from VW on October 18th that my docs/file are approved . I’ll either buy a $30 temporary tag or have the car towed to the dealer. The $100/year tag isn’t really the issue, it’s insurance value should the car be in an accident.

Well, I can carefully remove the bezel around the head unit, then take my time disassembling the hardware holding the unit in place.. or I can cut the damned thing out. And, I love my sawzall :)
