As someone who has never played a Pokemon game in their life, and wants to see what the hell all the fuss is about, what should I do to start my “grand adventure?”

I would highly recommend it. It has a great story with charming characters, however the only real thing that might raise an eyebrow is its abnormal battle system, which is... different than most games of its type.
