Good advice but I would like to add a few things/details to it. Use every technology available to make yourself heard and seen. Emails, instant messaging, telephone and webcams and find out and note how people prefer to communicate.

Cops need to have their training changed. Currently most training is to escalate to be the loudest, dominate and or intimidate in every situation and it is least expensive. That needs to be changed to de escalate, bring calm to the situation which takes a lot more practice and more money.
