I should add, if you have the chance to see Punch Brothers live, I could not recommend it more.  One of the best (probably the best) live performances I've ever seen.

As far as trying to name a successful sci-fi comedy movie, does Shaun of the Dead count?  It was the only other one I came up with that seemed to meet the criteria, but then, I didn't exactly think too hard on it.

The characters aren't as strong.  That's the main thing for me.  Compared to The West Wing, when I always struggled to pick a favorite character because I liked all of them so much, I struggle to pick a character on The Newsroom as my favorite because I don't like any of them, really.  Sorkin has never had an issue…
