Never even seen School of Rock? That’s a fun crowd-pleasing comedy. But for more “typical” Linklater, then the Before trilogy is a must (Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight), as well as Dazed and Confused and Boyhood. But yeah, A Scanner Darkly is a lot better than Waking Life in my opinion...definitely worth checking out.

Yeah, Linklater clearly had a certain affection for Jones from back when he was just a harmless-seeming Art Bell-esque crank with a local radio show — he’s in Dazed and Confused as well. As you say, it aged weirdly.

One of the parts of this movie that aged the weirdest is Alex Jones playing a conspiracy theorist who’s on to what’s actually happening and gets black bagged.

Bernie is also great. Jack Black puts in a surprisingly great performance. (That is to say, we actually see Jack Black the actor rather than Jack Black the zany guy.)

Waking Life is intolerable. Dazed and Confused is much, much, much better. Ditto Before Sunrise (the other "Before" movies are also very good) and Boyhood.
