Yeah, you're probably right. "Races" shouldn't mix or speak to each other just in case their conversation is misconstrued by giving each other advice or something. I mean, how terribly unrealistic in a very realistic movie for a white lady to compliment a member of another race…..

Aaaand….what? Latinos mustn't ever be blue collar workers in films nor can working class mothers ever be inspirational…..please give us your more extensive list of our constraints when making and watching films….

Her "Tweets" made perfect sense. You seem to believe, for some reason, that to fight for equal pay for women means you must sacrifice belief in equal rights for others. What a strange paradigm you follow.

That's how YOU read it..devoid of context….for example speaking off the cuff in an interview after winning a major award and not writing a scholarly article. Then again, maybe you think we should live in a word where language exists to not offend someone somewhere.

LOL. Those are a lot of really specific assumptions to make about someone…..you've just assumed he is straight, male, and white simply because he stated "heart in the right place". Wow. I guess I have to assume you are an under employed liberal arts graduate?

LOL…..try going through the green card process which really isn't a "color" thing anyway…..

Gee, thanks. I didn't really know providing for one's family and loved ones had much to do with nationality, but perhaps you're reading into something I'm not.

It's called "marketing". It's something people do to make money. Good for the owner of the steakhouse. He just made a good business decision. Hilarious you think people actually doing work and earning a living is a "hissyfit".

With all due respect you "90%" comment is coming from "psychological autopsies" which are post-death diagnosis based on interviews with friends and family members after the person committed suicide. In fact, your link specifically states that these disorders often WEREN'T diagnosed.

I saw a Japanese guy wearing a tie today and had a similar thought

Or "Soul Man".

Ha. I thought the exact same thing. "Invisible Man" is, in my opinion, the greatest American novel ever written and surely is not tone-deaf on race.

Are you saying everyone who commits suicide has a "major depressive disorder"? I don't think that's true at all. In fact, some people are clinically depressed or have another disorder and some are just "weak" for lack of a better word. This entire debate on here seems like it's one or the other. It's not.

Well, not only racist. Everyone is bigoted in some way. Is everyone here going to sit there and pretend they've never made fun of old, fat, disabled, races, blondes, women, men, religious people, rural people, urban people…etc.

Hahaha. That's who I thought it was when I clicked on the article.

Sorry, I didn't realize the word "hobo" was so fancy…..I'll try to be less pretentious in this post.

Care to explain what "liberal arts" has to do with women? You are saying you think valuing "doing" over "talking" has to do with gender? I'd love to hear this….

My, word. How would you know what I take pleasure in or don't? Perhaps I'm a curmudgeon who enjoys pointing out your hubris.

Your characterization of "white flight" is true of the Midwest/Rust Belt as well. (I'm not sure about your use of the word "threatening"….).

You are working from the classic outsider perspective. I suggest your comments on Jersey, where you grew up is far more valid than your impressions distilled from conversations with people in small towns as you were passing through. Writing about them as if you were going on a trip to the zoo doesn't really help your
