I think it depends on a lot on when you first played the series. Mario Kart Wii was the first version I played, so I have a lot of fond memories of it (though I do now prefer MK8).

I couldn't stand the new player either, but I found a way to watch the episode with the old one. Just add this as a bookmarklet and click it with an episode open. It will show a dialog with the URL for the old player.
The kids appeared to be pretty young. Plus, the Mother hadn't been cast yet when they filmed that sequence with the older kids.
