Well, at the time, she was ridiculed for wanting to better herself intellectually. I think she was quite bright, but poorly educated. And I hate the contempt people have for her — she was smart enough to create a persona that has survived well past her death. That isn't the work of a stupid person.

It used to be the same way with women in certain male-dominated professions. When my mother, the perfect straight-A student, went to medical school in the late '70s, she worked super hard to prove how great she was, because her male counterparts claimed she had only been accepted "because she was a woman."

the same thing happens with college admissions. if you actually look at the stats, they're trying to maintain a percentage. like, always 60-70% white folks, 15-20 asians & the 10-15 black people and then throw in a few students from conflict areas.
