I’m convinced my 1st gen Zune 30 will never die at this point. The battery seems to have brought itself back from the brink of death, and the firmware is becoming more stable with age. It defies logic. Which leads me to believe that it will stop working tomorrow.

Iirc the response time from mars is like 20 minutes, so you’re probably correct in your assessment that they need to conserve energy. Since its so far from the sun I would imagine that its ability to recharge using solar takes much longer as well.
